Porsche customer teams finish 1–2 in Tokyo as Dan Ticktum claims Saturday victory

Dan Ticktum claimed his second ABB FIA Formula E World Championship victory in Saturday’s Tokyo E-Prix for Porsche customer team Cupra Krio. With Andretti Formula E’s Jake Dennis finishing second, Porsche customer teams secured a 1–2 finish under the floodlights of Tokyo. It marked only the second such result in Formula E history, following the Sanya E-Prix five weeks ago, which was won by Dennis. Porsche Formula E Team drivers Nico Müller and Pascal Wehrlein both failed to score after separate collisions. Müller finished P18, while Wehrlein was unclassified.

Ticktum started the 36-lap race from sixth on the grid and worked his way to the front, having been among the first drivers to complete both his fast-charging pit stop and Attack Mode. The Briton was overtaken for the lead by Dennis but reclaimed the position on the final lap to secure his first victory of the season, having also set the fastest lap of the race. Dennis finished second after starting from pole position and leading the most laps. Thanks to the points scored by the customer teams, Porsche extended its lead over Jaguar in the manufacturers’ standings.

Wehrlein started the race from eighth on the grid but sustained damage to his 99X Electric in a collision with another driver. The Porsche factory driver served a 10-second penalty for the incident.

After crashing in the first qualifying semi-final, Müller’s car required a chassis swap. The Porsche Formula E Team’s mechanics completed the rebuild just in time, releasing the Swiss driver from the garage with around one and a half minutes remaining before the pit exit closed. Starting fourth on the grid, Müller was involved in an opening-lap collision with the same driver as Wehrlein, forcing an unscheduled pit stop. He carried damage for the remainder of the race.

Racing for Charity

Under the motto Racing for Charity, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is making a strong social statement in the current Formula E season, supporting seriously ill children worldwide. For every lap completed by its two factory-run Porsche 99X Electric, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer donates 400 euros to the charitable organizations Kinderherzen retten e.V., Interplast Germany e.V., and the Ferry Porsche Foundation. After Nico Müller completed the maximum number of laps at the 14th race of the season in Tokyo and Pascal Wehrlein reached 24 laps, the donation amount stands at 362,800 Euro.

Comments on the Tokyo E-Prix

Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E: “That was a very disappointing result today. First of all, a big thank you to the entire team for the tremendous effort between qualifying and the race to get Nico’s car back on the grid after his crash – that was a huge job. With Nico starting fourth and Pascal eighth, we were in a strong position. Unfortunately, both were involved in separate incidents with the same competitor and missed out on the points. Pascal’s car required repairs, while Nico’s needed checking following the contact. We now need to regroup, focus on tomorrow and come back stronger. Congratulations to our customer teams on their podium results. They demonstrated the pace of our packages, and their performance has extended Porsche’s lead in the manufacturers’ championship.”

Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche factory driver (#94): “Today was a tough day that basically ended after a collision. We repaired the car and tried to continue, but we were obviously out of the points. At least there are still three races to go and we remain in the title fight, so we’ll keep pushing hard, starting tomorrow.”

Nico Müller, Porsche factory driver (#51): “A huge thank you to all the mechanics and everyone in the team for rebuilding the car in time. Thanks to a strong one-lap performance, we earned the chance to start from P4. I really wanted to repay the team’s effort with a podium, but contact on the opening lap caused suspension damage. We tried to continue in the hope of salvaging something, but there were no points for us today. I feel very sorry for everyone in the team, who worked so hard to get the car back on track, and I can’t wait to get back out there tomorrow and end our Tokyo trip on a high.”
