Nico Müller takes maiden Formula E win and secures home success for Porsche in Berlin

Nico Müller claimed his first ABB FIA Formula E World Championship win on Saturday in the Berlin E-Prix, securing victory on home soil for the Porsche Formula E Team as a puncture meant Pascal Wehrlein finished P19.

Jake Dennis of customer team Andretti Formula E finished fifth, with Pepe Martí for Cupra Kiro in seventh making it three Porsche-powered cars inside the top ten.

Müller started sixth for the 39-lap race at the former Tempelhof airport circuit and circulated in the midfield during the early proceedings. After making his Pit Boost stop, Müller moved towards the front of the field but with more energy than his rivals courtesy of the highly efficient Porsche 99X Electric. Becoming the first of the leading runners to take his single Attack Mode, Müller raced into the lead and claimed victory by nearly five seconds.

Müller’s maiden Formula E win in his first season with the Porsche Formula E Team ensures that Porsche continues to lead the teams’ and manufacturers’ standings, despite Wehrlein failing to score points for the first time this season. The former World Champion started on the front row in Berlin, his first of the campaign after showing strong pace, but a mid-race puncture left him at the back of the pack and dropped him from top spot in the drivers’ standings.

Iconic ‘Pink Pig’ livery makes return

Both factory-run Porsche 99X Electric featured the famous ‘Pink Pig’ livery in Berlin, to celebrate the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer’s home event and as a thank you to the fans. The iconic paint scheme first appeared at the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche’s 917/20 but remains iconic more than five decades later. The Pink Pig’s most successful outing came during the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it reappeared on a Porsche 911 RSR driven by Michael Christensen, Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor as the trio took victory in the GTE Pro category. The victorious car was on-site in Berlin, allowing fans to get up close with a unique piece of motorsport history.

Celebrating 75 years of motorsport at home event

The first of the two E-Prix races in Berlin proved popular, attracting a sell-out crowd for the day as 75 years of Porsche Motorsport was also celebrated during the event. An exhibition of historic race cars features on display over the weekend, including legendary examples such as the Porsche 550 Spyder and the Porsche 917. The cars will complete parade laps on both race days, while well-known Porsche guests on Saturday included former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber and German actor Richy Müller.

Racing for Charity

Under the motto Racing for Charity, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is making a strong social statement in the current Formula E season, supporting seriously ill children worldwide. For every race lap completed by its two factory-run Porsche 99X Electric, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer donates 400 euros to the charitable organizations Kinderherzen retten e.V., Interplast Germany e.V., and the Ferry Porsche Foundation.

On the occasion of the Berlin E-Prix, Formula E also joined the effort for a good cause, and as part of its Better Futures Fund, the all-electric World Championship made an additional donation of 25,000 euros. Through this funding programme, Formula E supports charitable organisations and projects in the host countries of its races.

After Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller completed the maximum number of laps at the seventh race of the season in Berlin, the donation amount stands at 211,400 Euro.

Comments on the Berlin E-Prix

Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E: “Amazing first day in Berlin, our home race and with Porsche celebrating 75 years of Porsche Motorsport. The first win for Nico in the factory team and in Formula E is very special. A very well-executed strategy from the whole team and Nico drove very well, especially with the tyre management. On the other side, Pascal unfortunately had a puncture which is not how it should end, but we try again tomorrow to score big points with both cars. All the support has been incredible from the fans but also the friends and families of those in the team and back at the factory. Thanks to everyone for the support, and especially to the whole team. Everybody executed perfectly in a very complex race.”

Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche factory driver (#94): “Not the outcome we wanted. We started well with P2 in qualifying. I think we tried the correct strategy of saving a lot of energy in the beginning. Unfortunately, just before the Pit Boost, I had a small contact which broke the valve of the rim and gave me a puncture. From there my race was pretty much over. I think the most important thing is we were quick today. Big congratulations to Nico! We were both on a similar strategy, so it was definitely the right thing to do – but sometimes you get unlucky.”

Nico Müller, Porsche factory driver (#51): “I am super relieved and super grateful to get the win. I still don’t think I’ve realised what we did yet on a special weekend. To come here on a big weekend, you want to make the fans proud and make sure you add to the ‘Pink Pig’ livery’s history a little bit. To do it the way we did today makes me very proud, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity. When you get to represent Porsche, it is already a big step in your career. And to finally make it happen at the 69th attempt, to win for them in Berlin and on the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport, it’s very special. Thanks for all the support, we go again tomorrow.”
