Sunday Drives: Kristin Lätt in a Macan in Estonia

For much of Kristin Lätt’s professional life, an early Sunday drive was anything but relaxing. Travelling to tournaments across the US and Europe on the Disc Golf Pro Tour, Sundays meant the final round – and all the pressure that came with it. Thankfully for Lätt, a two-time world champion and former world number one, the drive home, often with silverware in tow, was a far calmer affair.

Having reached the apex of her sport – with records including the highest ever rating for a female disc golfer and the first major grand slam achieved by a woman in a single season – Lätt is now stepping back after a decade at the top. While life as a mother, brand ambassador and commentator keeps her busy, this pause has brought something new: time. Time with family in her native Estonia, time to pursue new goals – and time to rediscover the simple pleasure of a Sunday drive in her all-electric Macan, through the country’s pine forests.

At 34, Lätt’s passion for the outdoors remains unchanged – only now, it’s no longer tied to competition. “My drive still takes me to a disc golf course,” she says. “But now it’s about enjoying time with my friends, out in nature. I take the road down the west coastline of Estonia, to the Jõulumäe recreation centre, through the beautiful pine forest.”

Starting in Lätt’s home city of Pärnu, this route along the Via Baltica goes from the city’s beaches into the dense pine forest of the Uulu-Võiste nature reserve. Beginning as a dual carriageway, the road soon narrows as it enters the forest. Though just minutes from the city and a few hundred metres from the sea, as tall pines envelop the surroundings, the calming ambience of the forest is unavoidable on this stretch of road. A left turn, following signs to Jõulumäe, leads to a centre offering year-round sport and recreation.

It’s a short, scenic drive with which Lätt has long been familiar. “I spent much of my childhood at the recreation centre,” she says. “You can do lots of different sports there. I did cross country skiing for a for a long time. It’s an environment in which I thrive.” It’s also an environment for which her break from competition has given her a new appreciation. “I’ve taken up beach tennis – I even play indoors there in winter. We all need time to be playful, whether alone or with friends and family. Without that, life becomes a little dull.”

Lätt carries this philosophy over to driving. “I've been a very practical person for the longest time,” she says. “I had a car to get from A to B, and it didn’t really matter how but recently I’ve started to value the time spent in the Macan. If you have the option to make it more comfortable, more luxurious, more enjoyable in general, then why not? Once my career gave me the opportunity to drive a Porsche, it was hard to go back.” That pragmatic approach was perhaps inherited from her father, who encouraged her to drive from a young age, helping her gain confidence on Estonia’s quiet rural roads.

With fewer long-haul journeys to competitions, driving has taken on a new role. “I enjoy it differently now. It’s time to myself – music, podcasts or just the quiet,” she says. “Having an electric car is perfect because it is so quiet, and in the Estonian countryside it makes you feel more connected to everything around you.”

For Lätt, a Sunday drive is no longer about the destination – or even the sport that once defined it – but what it represents. “Getting into my Porsche is a reminder of how far I’ve come,” she says. “So many of my dreams have come true, and owning a Porsche is one of them. My career has been an incredible journey – and right now, I’m enjoying the time to reflect on it.”
